B-17 Flying Fortress

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was the first mass-produced, four-engine heavy bomber. It is still one of the most recognised aeroplanes ever built. It was most widely used for daylight strategic bombings of German industrial targets during World War II as part of the United States Eighth Air Force.

This is the latest addition from the Funk Works. The prototype made it's maiden flight on January 21st, 2005. The model features balsa and lite ply construction. Removable wing panels allow for easier transport. The flat bottom airfoil generates ample lift for the 6lbs model. The prototype is powered by a Thunder Tiger Pro .36 engine turning a 10x5 prop. This engine provided more than enough power for the model. Plans will be available soon!

Above are a few photos of the U-2 prototype. Click on each thumbnail to view a larger image.

Some images show the camera pods under each wing panel. There is also an actual image taken using the wing pod mounted cameras. I used an Aiptek PenCam 1.3 SD camera that was modified with a solid state switch to activate the shutter via a spare r/c channel.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like information on how to order a set of plans.
